Landing the Millwall striker would have been the cherry on top for many
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Stockport County had a relatively strong January transfer window thanks to their work on deadline day.
Having already brought in attacking talents Micah Hamilton, on loan from Middlesbrough, and Benony Breki Andresson, the Hatters sealed deals for Brad Hills and Sam Cosgrove — on loan from Norwich City and Barnsley respectively — plus a permanent deal for Portsmouth’s Owen Moxon.
But there’s always room for improvement, and that’s true in the minds of some fans at Edgeley Park.
We asked our Stockport Fan Pundit, James, for the one thing he wished the club had done in January.
Speaking to Football League World, James said: “If there's one thing I could wish our club did or a player that our club could've, and should've, signed I mean, we have signed a striker in Sam Cosgrove from Barnsley, on loan for the remainder of the season.
“He does offer something different but it's not that dissimilar to the way [Kyle] Wootton wants to play, you know, big man up top, and I think Wootton's leagues better than him at that job. So, it's a good signing for depth, but other than that, I don't think he'll get many games.
“But there's a player, a certain Macaulay Langstaff, that I thought, ‘you know what? That'll be a really, really good signing’, because he hasn't particularly shone at Millwall.
“I think it was a bit of a step too far when he went from League Two all the way up to the Championship, and his confidence is knocked.
“And I think maybe a loan move for the remainder of the season, where he gets his confidence back up, he scores goals — because that's what he does. He just does score goals — yeah, I would have loved to see that go through and I think that would have just topped off this window.
“But yeah, there isn't much I can really complain about. There was stuff I was complaining about before deadline day, when we signed three new players in Brad Hills, Sam Cosgrove and Owen Moxon, who I think is a great signing.
“I don't think there's much to complain about. We've got centre-back depth, we've got striker depth, and we've got midfield depth. And we've brought in Micah Hamilton as well, who's also a great signing. So yeah, there isn't much to complain about for me.”
With just 14 starts and one Championship goal to his name after the halfway point in the season has passed, it has not been a dream start to life in the second tier for Langstaff.
But anyone who followed his time at Notts County, before the Millwall switch, will know only too well what a deadly striker he is.
In back-to-back season he plundered 41 goals in the National League and 28 goals in League Two for the Magpies, before the Lions won the race to his signature in the summer.
It’s clear the jump has been difficult, so a temporary drop back down, to a club at Stockport’s level, may have got the 28-year-old firing again.
The pressure would have been taken off Wootton’s shoulders, the Hatters would have bolstered their attack for the play-off run and Millwall would have got Langstaff back with his confidence up.
For whatever reason, that didn’t happen, and was seemingly never on according to journalist Sam Byrne, but on paper it looked like a move that could have worked, and would have been the cherry on top of a strong January window at Edgeley Park.
