After the disappointing defeat to Dinamo Zagreb, Mike Maignan spoke to the media and admitted that morale is low in the AC Milan locker room, having missed out on a big opportunity.

Milan headed into the game knowing that a win was more or less needed to protect a top-eight finish in the league phase of the Champions League. However, after an early goal conceded and a red card for Yunus Musah, things got very difficult for Milan.

Maignan ended up conceding twice as the former Serie A man Marko Pjaca restored the lead in the second half, scoring the winner. Speaking to MilanTV after the game, as transcribed by MilanNews, the goalkeeper admitted that morale is low.

On the game…

“We made a mistake, we could have finished in the top 8. A game to forget, we should have done better. Morale is low, but we have to react immediately for the upcoming game. We can’t give up, we are Milan. Tonight we did poorly, we have to move forward and try not to repeat the mistakes.”

How do you react now?

“It’s not over, we wanted to do better and finish well in the Champions League. We know that in these moments, it’s difficult but we must never give up”.

The derby against Inter is up next and it’s clear that Milan will need a response in that game. However, it doesn’t matter much as a huge opportunity was indeed wasted tonight. It might even mean that the signing of Santiago Gimenez isn’t feasible anymore.
