Man City have been dealt a major blow in the Premier League title race after tests confirmed the injury sustained by Rodri.

The Spanish midfielder’s knee seemingly buckled during last weekend’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal, leaving him in agony on the Emirates Stadium pitch before hobbling off.

Following reports of a potentially season-ending injury, Pep Guardiola said on Tuesday that Rodri would be out “for a long time” but added that initial assessments suggested he could be sidelined for less time than expected.

Those hopes were largely extinguished on Wednesday morning after the 28-year-old received specialist consultation in Spain, which revealed he has suffered ligament damage.

Man City confirm Rodri injury

A statement from the club read: “Manchester City FC can confirm that Rodri has suffered a ligament injury to his right knee.

“The injury was sustained during the first half of this weekend’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal in the Premier League.

“The midfielder travelled to Spain to seek specialist consultation this week, following initial tests in Manchester.

“Assessment remains ongoing to ascertain the full extent of the injury and expected prognosis. Everyone at the club wishes him a speedy recovery.”

The news is a huge setback in Man City’s bid to win an unprecedented fifth Premier League title in a row, with both Arsenal and Liverpool their closes challengers this season.

Rodri has been arguably the team’s most important player of the past few years, playing a key role in midfield. He scored the decisive goal in the club’s maiden Champions League triumph in 2023.

City have lost 33.3 per cent of Premier League games without Rodri since he joined the club in 2019. The loss rate reduces to just 10.9 per cent when he does play.
