Manchester City will be looking to take another step toward FA Cup glory when they host Bournemouth in the quarter-finals on Sunday at 4:30pm (UK time).
Man City (4-1-4-1): Ortega; Lewis, Khusanov, Dias, Gvardiol; Gonzalez, Gundogan; Savinho, Marmoush, Doku; Haaland.
Pep Guardiola’s men have suffered a dismal Premier League campaign, but remain favourites to lift the FA Cup. If they can confirm Champions League qualification and bring home another trophy, that’ll go a long way toward putting a positive spin on a tough season. For now, they’ll just be focusing on trying to get past a quality Bournemouth outfit.
Injuries have decimated City at times this season and while things do seem to be improving, Guardiola is still dealing with some important absentees.
Rodri is out for the season, while defensive trio John Stones, Manuel Akanji and Nathan Ake won’t feature in this game — the former two aren’t due back until later in April, while the latter isn’t expected to be fit until mid-July.
However, City are boosted by Ederson being cleared fit to play, though Guardiola may opt to field Stefan Ortega in a cup game anyway. Oscar Bobb could also make a return to the squad for the first time since the Community Shield in August.
The FA Cup could go a long way toward defining whether or not this season can still be viewed as a success for City, but with so many fitness problems, Guardiola will have to carefully shuffle his pack.
Jack Grealish’s chances have been very few and far between this season. In fact, since January 29th alone, the England international has played just 31 minutes of Premier League and Champions League football combined.
However, in the FA Cup, he’s done his level best to prove what he can still offer to Pep Guardiola.
Grealish has played maximum minutes in this season’s competition and has certainly made the most of it, notching one goal and three assists so far; including a goal and two assists in an 8-0 thrashing of Salford City. No player has registered more direct goal involvements in this season’s FA Cup than him.
Grealish didn’t score in the previous round as City came from behind to beat Plymouth 3-1. But even then, he created five chances — including one big chance — and attempted two shots alongside six successful dribbles from nine attempted and 11 touches in the opposition box in a vibrant performance.
The level of opposition is ramping up, but Grealish will feel he’s done more than enough to be given another chance to shine in the FA Cup.
