Manchester United decided to part ways with Jadon Sancho on deadline day last summer following a late approach from Chelsea.
The Englishman joined the Blues on loan with an obligation to buy for an initial £20 million, provided the club finish above 15th in the Premier League.
Sancho had a lively start with three assists in as many league games, but his form has dipped since, with two goals and one assist in the next 15 top-flight matches.
The winger also had a forgettable outing against Brighton & Hove Albion in the FA Cup fourth round last weekend.
Sancho played 74 minutes on the left wing. He completed 94 percent of his passes but did not provide any attacking output, with zero shots attempted.
The United loanee failed to win any of his seven duels. He did not complete a dribble (0/3) or a cross (0/2) before teenager Tyrique George replaced him.
United’s hierarchy received criticism for parting ways with Sancho before the summer deadline, but the decision has been proved right with recent displays.
The attacker started the campaign at Chelsea with a point to prove, but his performances have drastically dipped which was a regular theme at Old Trafford.
Considering this, a deal worth £20m rising to £25m seems reasonably good.
United would have preferred to secure around £35-40m, but keeping him for another year did not make sense as he was out of favour under former manager Erik ten Hag.
The Red Devils look on course for a financial boost from Sancho’s exit at the end of the season.
Hopefully, the funds recouped will be utilised to pursue a young winger with potential who would suit manager Ruben Amorim’s tactical requirements.
