Manchester United are desperately in need of goals and are “seriously considering” a move for Lille striker Jonathan David to address the problem, according to reports in Italy.

The Canada international has entered the last six months of his contract and is sure to be on the move come summer, and United are thought to be at the head of the queue to bring him in.

According to TuttoJuve, the striker “represents a golden opportunity for Manchester United who are seriously considering the option of making a move for the Les Dogues hitman.”

The report adds that “it looks like there will be a frantic race” for the player who “Juventus also like.”

With both goals and money in seemingly short supply at Old Trafford, David on a free transfer could be a masterful piece of business.

The 24-year-old has bagged 17 goals in 28 matches for Lille this season as he continues to build his reputation as one of the deadliest strikers in Europe.

He has scored 26 goals in each of the last two seasons, showing a consistency United’s current crop of forwards can only dream of.

It is thought that Lille would rather lose their talismanic forward for free at the end of the season rather than accept a fee for a January switch, as reported by Fabrizio Romano back in November.

The respected journalist reported that a contract offer had been made to the player, but the expectation remained that he would leave on a free in the summer.

The Red Devils have been desperately poor at the sharp end of the pitch this season, managing only 23 goals in the Premier League – only four teams have scored fewer, and two of those are in the relegation zone.

Joshua Zirkzee was signed in the summer to add to United’s firepower but has struggled to adapt to life in English football, managing just four goals from 29 appearances in all competitions.

Rasmus Hojlund has also looked out of his depth this season but has slightly better stats, with seven goals in 24, and the contributions from other attackers have been reasonable at best.
