Champions League winning former Manchester United goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak claims the club’s problems this season are because of a lack of togetherness.
The Polish shot-stopper, who made 61 appearances and lifted 10 trophies in six years at Old Trafford, has become the latest former United player to attempt to diagnose the club’s persistent problems.
He pointed out that he and his teammates remain tight knit, in contrast to how he perceives United’s current setup.
He told Hayters TV on behalf of 888 Sport: “United was all about family and spirit, and this is what has changed. I can tell. The players try hard, and they put good effort in on the pitch, they run, they chase, they do everything, but maybe something different.
“When I had the pleasure to play for United at the time, which was one of the most successful times, we were a family. Sir Alex Ferguson was the last manager to build a team like that.”
According to Kuszczak, this is stark contrast the mentality in today’s squad: “When we came to the club in the morning you could feel that we are a family. There wasn’t a chance that somebody would not give 100% effort in training. I don’t talk even about the games. The mentality was different definitely.”
With Amorim being United’s sixth permanent manager since Ferguson’s departure, Kuszczak believes the lack of continuity is having a negative effect on squad building, with the club now lacking the same consistent core players it relied on. He also feels that the club have overpaid for underperforming players.
He continued: “There have been some fantastic managers coming with experience, good CV, good background. To be honest none of them changed something for positive.
“The problem is the managers try different tactics over the last couple of years, over the last couple of years big players leave the club.
“The players who cost millions and the club was quite sure that they would perform the same as they did in previous clubs, it looks like most of them didn’t. This is the problem.”
In Kuszczak’s eyes, the high turnover rate has hurt the club’s identity: “That is what happens at United. The players coming don’t understand what United is about. Where are the players which mold the core? It is the same players for years.
“You talk about players coming and going, we had Scholes, Rooney, Ferdinand, doing ten or twelve years at the club and they all understood that if you want to be a Manchester United player you have to be not what you were in the previous club.”
Despite recent trials, though, Kuszczak believes United could be entering a better period under Amorim.
He said: “Obviously United are underperforming for a long time now. Nobody knows the recipe for it. I hope the new manager can find the solution.
“The last 12 games have been difficult. I think [Amorim] is a great manager, but it is a difficult position. He took over a team that was struggling, and to change something that is not there day after day, he needs time for it to see the system and the players during the game.”
