Manchester City continue to be linked with a Real Madrid winger but it appears to be a fanciful move

There is a case to be made that Manchester City should sign another winger in the summer. Pep Guardiola’s squad does have Savinho, Jeremy Doku, Jack Grealish, Oscar Bobb, Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva who can play on either wing. In the case of Doku and Savinho, the pair have been Guardiola’s preferred options out wide of late. But they are young, and there is an inconsistency in their output. Oscar Bobb has been injured all season, and Grealish, Foden, and Bernardo haven’t been at their best this season.
So there is a mounting case for Manchester City to sign a winger this summer. Now a new report indicates that City retain an interest in Real Madrid winger Rodrygo. The Brazilian international would add what City’s squad lacks but a move for him in the summer appears unlikely for a host of reasons.
First of all, Spanish journalist Eduardo Inda has revealed on Spanish TV show OK Diaro that Manchester City have recently met with Rodrygo’s father. Eduardo Inda had this to see about the proposed meeting: “They tell me that Rodrygo’s father—those close to him deny it, but they tell me he goes to church – he met with people from Manchester City a few weeks ago, and they insist he play with Pep Guardiola. They’re offering him to play on the left wing, which is what the kid and his father want. Real Madrid can’t guarantee him that position because of Vinicius and Mbappé. City would offer him to play in that position and for more money.”
The idea of Rodrygo playing on the left wing for Manchester City is an exciting prospect to ponder. He would add goals to the City attack and he does have a habit of scoring key goals in big matches. Manchester City know this all too well. He is 24 years of age and entering the prime of his career. At Real Madrid, he can’t play on the left because Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe both prefer to operate in that position. He could, in theory at least, play on the left in Pep Guardiola’s side.
But the problem is why would Real Madrid sell a key player to Manchester City? Despite Pep Guardiola’s side not being at their best this season the two clubs have had an intense rivalry over recent seasons. It’s unlikely that the European champions would sell a key player to strengthen Manchester City. Secondly, Rodrygo is contracted to Real Madrid until 2028. They aren’t under any pressure to sell the Brazilian international. Those are just two factors that make a City move for Rodrygo seem unlikely at this stage.
Of course, the situation surrounding Rodrygo could change in the summer. But for now, it’s a move that seems extremely unlikely although the Brazilian international would fill a need in the Manchester City squad.
