The 22-year-old has come through the ranks at Molineux, but he has struggled for regular football, with his game time in recent years coming from various loan spells.

It was a surprise to many that Cundle didn’t leave Wolves in the summer window, so he has spent the past few months featuring for the U23s, despite the first-team struggling in the Premier League.

Luke Cundle set to join Millwall in £1m transfer deal

Therefore, a switch before February 3rd has always been on the cards, and a host of clubs have been linked with Cundle.

But, it appears that Millwall are set to win the race to sign the player, as Telegraph reporter John Percy revealed they have reached an agreement with Wolves, and Cundle is now set to undergo a medical before the deal is finalised.

Millwall have agreed a £1m deal with Wolves to sign midfielder Luke Cundle, who is set for a medical later today.”

Alex Neil will no doubt be hoping the transfer can be confirmed in time for Cundle to feature against QPR at The Den this weekend.

Luke Cundle transfer makes sense for Millwall

As outlined above, Cundle simply had to leave Wolves at this stage of his career, as he isn’t anywhere near the first-team, and he needs to play regularly.

He should get that with Millwall, and the Lions deserve credit for seemingly winning the race to sign Cundle, as he has shown he is a good player at this level.

Having featured for Swansea, Plymouth and Stoke in the past, Cundle knows what the Championship is all about, and he is the sort of signing that should be able to make an instant impact.

Another positive to this deal is that Cundle will bring different qualities to the Millwall midfield.

He is comfortable on the ball, and whether it’s playing as a traditional central midfielder, or in a more advanced role, he is capable in different positions, and has abilities that Neil’s side may currently lack.

So, this could turn out to be a shrewd bit of business by the Lions, and whilst Cundle is by no means a replacement for Romain Esse, he should bring some additional creativity to the side.

Millwall are currently 14th in the Championship after back-to-back victories eased any fears they could be dragged into a relegation battle, and they’re now just seven points off the play-off places.
