The future of Theo Hernandez at Milan was already in serious jeopardy due to the stalling extension talks, and his silly red card against Feyenoord, which contributed to costing his team access to the Round of 16, might have sealed it once and for all, La Gazzetta dello Sport relayed.
The Frenchman was booked twice in a span of a handful of minutes before and after halftime, first for inexplicably holding onto an opponent at length and then for blatantly diving in the box. He was one yellow card away from disqualification, so the first infraction was already questionable.
Despite the optimism expressed by the Milan officials, the team and the Theo Hernandez camp have never been too close to agreeing to a renewal because of his lofty demands. He’d have to drastically reduce them to stay at this point.
The Rossoneri could decide to cut bait and sell him to the highest bidder. They always refused to really entertain such a possibility in the past when his valuation was much higher. Como offered €40M in January. The player quickly nixed the move, but the team hadn’t exactly shut the door.
His permanence already seemed difficult beforehand, but the writing is on the wall at this point. He has always had the occasional boneheaded plays, but at least he made up for that with dominating performances. Those have been very rare this campaign, while the defensive blunders abounded. He will be in for an interesting summer, as Bayern Munich are no longer a viable landing spot after re-upping with Alphonso Davies. He won’t lack suitors but might have to settle for a not-so-glamorous destination.
