Lazio manager Marco Baroni made a mea culpa following his side’s shocking 0-5 defeat at the hands of Bologna.

Humbling Defeat for Lazio

The Emilians suddenly rose to fourth place in the table, also taking advantage of Juve’s 0-3 loss in Florence, while the woeful Biancocelesti dropped to 6th, with their Champions League hopes now looking in great risk.

Maro Baroni Apologises to Lazio supporters

After the final whistle, the irritated travelling supporters summoned the players towards the away end for a word. A circulating video captured the moment, as Baroni did his best to shield the players from the ultras’ wrath by insisting this was his own doing.

It’s my fault. The team has nothing to do with it. The responsibility is mine, okay? I apologize to you, I apologize to everyone.

Luckily this exchange ended with the fans and the players exchanging applause, so one could say Baroni’s intervention paid dividends. Afterwards, the manager went on to explain the shocking result in his post-match press conference (via LazioNews24), while emphasizing the physical factor and the strength of his opponents.

You should never forget defeats. We found an opponent with so much more physical and mental presence, and we conceded the avoidable goal. Then we allowed back-to-back goals in the second half which led the team to give up, especially if you face a team that is doing very well. It’s a shame about the result, we knew it was a difficult match, they play with great energy, whereas we had many away games recently.

Marco Baroni Justifies Lazio Second-Half Changes

Lazio looked increasingly worse with every substitution made, with the likes of Gustav Isaksen and Mattia Zaccagni hauled off early. Baroni had to explain the reasons behind his perplexing changes, citing the squad’s physical decline due to the packed schedule.

We need to recover energy and recover some players who are not at their best. Marusic was not in perfect condition, but I didn’t want to risk Hysaj. Nuno told me he was having issues, so we preferred not to risk him. Adam sacrificed himself.  He has always been present. Isaksen was also not at his best. I don’t ‘kill’ my players, I protect them. Zaccagni was doing well but I knew he was tired as was Isaksen. I’d rather lose a match than a player, especially now. I took Guendouzi off because he was on a yellow card and the same thing with Vecino.
