German double winners Bayer Leverkusen knocked Bayern Munich out of the DFB-Pokal at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday night, winning 1-0 in a match that saw Manuel Neuer sent off for the home side in the first half.
With Harry Kane out injured, Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany opted to go with a 4-2-4 formation from the outset, with Jamal Musiala and Michael Olise operating in the centre.
Kompany's Leverkusen counterpart, Xabi Alonso, also chose to play without a traditional striker from the start of the game, instead using Florian Wirtz as a false nine.
And it was Wirtz who was on the end of the first real chance of the game in the 11th minute, dragging a shot wide of the post from just outside the box.
Manuel Neuer then made life very difficult for the home side in the 17th minute when he was shown a straight red card. The Bayern captain received his marching orders after making a run outside of the box and clumsily bringing down Jeremie Frimpong, who was chasing down a long ball.
With Sven Ulreich unavailable for personal reasons, Bayern's third-choice goalkeeper, Daniel Peretz, came on in Neuer's place and produced a fine save to deny Frimpong in the 33rd minute.
Despite being reduced to 10 men, Bayern created a handful of opportunities at the other end in the first half. A particularly good chance fell to Kingsley Coman in the 38th minute, but his miscued shot hit three Leverkusen defenders before the ball was cleared for a corner.
Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso introduced in-form striker Patrik Schick at half-time in place of Robert Andrich, but his side still struggled to create chances early in the second half.
And things didn't get any better for Bayer 04 when Patrik Schick went off injured in the 61st minute and was replaced by Nathan Tella.
But then, almost out of nowhere, it was Tella who broke the deadlock in the 69th minute, heading home Alejandro Grimaldo's cross to give the visitors the lead and send the away fans into a frenzy.
Kompany made a number of attacking changes as the second half wore on. Playing 11 against 10, however, Leverkusen held on until the final whistle to book their place in the quarter-finals and send Bayern out of the competition.
