Arsenal’s Striker Dilemma: Isak, Watkins and the Hunt for a World-Class No.9

Arsenal’s hunt for an elite striker is no secret. The Gunners have been on the lookout for a world-class No.9 to spearhead their attack and transform them from contenders into Premier League winners. Mikel Arteta has long wanted a prolific forward, and this summer, his ambitions are clear—Alexander Isak is the priority.

However, as TeamTalk reports, Newcastle are determined to keep hold of their Swedish talisman, and Arsenal may need a Plan B if their pursuit falls short. Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins remains a name of interest, but the feasibility of a deal is questionable.

Isak the Priority, But at What Cost?

Arsenal have gone “all out” in their attempts to land Isak, yet Newcastle are standing firm. A reported £150m price tag has been placed on the forward, an amount designed to deter any suitors. As one of the most exciting strikers in England, Isak’s stock has only risen further after his goal in Newcastle’s Carabao Cup final win over Liverpool.

Spanish reports suggest that Arsenal have now submitted what is already being labelled a ‘final offer’ of €120m (£101m). According to Fichajes, “the massive offer reflects the London club’s determination to secure the striker’s services.” But will Newcastle budge? Sources indicate that a “deal won’t be easy,” with the Magpies eager to retain their star man as they build for the future.

Watkins an Alternative, But a Tough Deal to Strike

While Isak remains the dream signing, Arsenal have other names on their radar. The January transfer window saw them test the waters for Watkins, but their late £40m bid was swiftly rejected.

Villa had little reason to entertain such an offer, especially after selling Jhon Duran to Al Nassr for £80m. As TeamTalk states, “The move to Arsenal would have been a dream come true for Watkins, who is an avid supporter of the Gunners and has openly admitted he dreams of playing for them.”

Despite Watkins’ desire to join, Villa have no pressing need to sell, and Arsenal would need to submit a significantly higher bid to stand any chance. The England international is under contract until 2028, meaning Villa hold all the power in negotiations.

A Defining Summer for Arsenal’s Attack

Arsenal’s need for a top-tier striker has been evident for two seasons. Gabriel Jesus, while a fine forward, hasn’t provided the ruthless goalscoring edge required to win the title. Eddie Nketiah remains a squad player rather than a leading man. If Arsenal are serious about bridging the gap to Manchester City, they must land a statement signing.

Isak is the preferred choice, but if the finances don’t align, Watkins could yet emerge as a viable alternative. However, either move will require Arsenal to dig deep—not just financially, but in negotiations.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

Expectant Arsenal fans are watching this situation unfold with bated breath. The ambition to sign Isak is exciting, but the figures involved are eye-watering. £150m is a steep price for a player with immense potential but who is yet to hit truly world-class consistency.

Watkins, on the other hand, would bring proven Premier League quality and an all-round game suited to Arteta’s system. Yet, the reluctance from Villa suggests this wouldn’t be an easy deal either. If Arsenal end the summer without either player, frustration will grow.

The club’s owners have shown a willingness to back Arteta in the market, but patience is wearing thin. The Gunners are close to something special—will they take the final step?
