Newcastle Seek Redemption at Wembley

Newcastle United head into today’s Carabao Cup final against Liverpool with no fresh injury concerns, offering Eddie Howe a welcome boost as he aims to end the club’s 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy.

While the Magpies have struggled for consistency in the Premier League, their resurgence in cup competitions under Howe has been notable. Having reached last year’s final only to fall short against Manchester United, Newcastle are desperate to right those wrongs at Wembley.

Selection Dilemmas for Eddie Howe

Preparation for this final has been far from straightforward. Anthony Gordon will be absent following his red card against Brighton in the FA Cup, leaving a gap on the left flank. Options to replace him include Harvey Barnes, Joe Willock, or Joelinton. The tactical setup will dictate the final selection, with Newcastle having utilised a back-three in their semi-final triumph over Arsenal.

Should Howe opt for a similar system, Callum Wilson could be paired with Alexander Isak in attack, though this remains unlikely given Newcastle’s usual shape.

Defensively, Howe faces further challenges. Lewis Hall has been ruled out for the season after ankle surgery, while Sven Botman requires another knee operation, ruling him out of action. In response, Tino Livramento is expected to start at left-back, with Kieran Trippier operating on the right. Dan Burn is set to partner Fabian Schar in central defence.

Joelinton’s positioning will be another key consideration. If the Brazilian is pushed forward to the left flank, Willock may join Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali in central midfield. Otherwise, Joelinton will slot into midfield, offering physicality and attacking thrust.

Predicted Newcastle Utd Line-up

Formation: 4-3-3 XI: Pope; Trippier, Schar, Burn, Livramento; Tonali, Guimaraes, Willock; Murphy, Isak, Joelinton Unavailable: Hall, Botman, Lascelles (injured), Gordon (suspended)

Liverpool will provide formidable opposition, but Newcastle’s recent pedigree in cup competitions suggests they will not be overawed by the occasion. With a chance to banish last year’s heartbreak and claim silverware, the Magpies will be fully focused on making history.
