Pep Guardiola and his players make the trip to the North East this weekend to face Newcastle United at Saturday lunchtime.

During midweek, Man City progressed through to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup by beating Championship outfit Watford 2-1 at the Etihad and they’ll play Tottenham Hotspur in the next round.

The Magpies will be looking to bounce back after they suffered their first defeat of the campaign, a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Guardiola has been dealt a double injury blow, with Rodri out for the rest of the season after having surgery on a ruptured ACL and Kevin De Bruyne reportedly not available for selection until after the next international break.

Eddie Howe’s side have had a full week to prepare, as their Carabao Cup Third Round match against AFC Wimbledon was postponed due to severe flood damage to the pitch at the Cherry Red Records Stadium.

Newcastle haven’t looked entirely convincing so far this season, but nonetheless find themselves in sixth place after five games.

However, their display last weekend in the capital was very flat and the Magpies looked vulnerable in possession, which Marco Silva’s Fulham took full of advantage of.

One positive for Eddie Howe was the fact that Harvey Barnes continued his goalscoring streak by netting Newcastle’s only goal in the 3-1 loss to the Cottagers, with the Englishman finding the net in three consecutive league games.

Their Carabao Cup game against Wimbledon has been rearranged to next Tuesday and the venue has been switched to St. James’ Park as the Wombles need time to fix the havoc the recent weather has caused to their pitch.

The Blue half of Manchester remain unbeaten this season and they will be aiming to retain their spot at the top of the Premier League table with a triumph in the North East.

That thrilling 2-2 draw with Arsenal at the Etihad last weekend was the first time their invincibility was seriously threatened this campaign as John Stones equalised in the eighth minute of stoppage time.

If Erling Haaland scores against Newcastle, it’ll extend his run of netting in consecutive league matches to six.

Guardiola will have a selection headache over the next fortnight as his midfield options have recently been depleted due to the injuries Rodri and De Bruyne have picked up.

City return to European action next Tuesday as they travel to Slovakia to play Slovan Bratislava.

Last Meeting

Manchester City 2-0 Newcastle United, FA Cup, 16th March 2024

The last time Man City played Newcastle they knocked the Magpies out of the FA Cup at the quarter-final stage thanks to a brace from Bernardo Silva.

It was a pedestrian affair as City controlled the game and had a few slices of luck to help them triumph over Eddie Howe’ side.

It was a fortuitous opening goal, as Silva’s effort wickedly deflected off Dan Burn’s heel and looped over the helpless Martin Dubravka.

The diminutive midfielder got his and City’s second on the half hour mark as he cut inside and again his strike took a nick off a Newcastle defender to fly past the unfortunate Dubravka.

The rest of the tie was played with relative comfort by the hosts as Newcastle couldn’t muster up a response after that double dose of misfortune.

That victory booked them a spot at Wembley where they beat Chelsea 1-0 but eventually went on to lose 2-1 in the cup final at Wembley to fierce local rivals Manchester United.
