Manchester City return to Premier League action for the first time since their battle with Arsenal by travelling to St James’ Park for a clash against Newcastle United.

It is the latest test for Pep Guardiola’s side, who are looking to overcome a growing list of injury problems within their squad roster and maintain their unbeaten start across all competitions so far this season.

Last time out saw John Stones score with the final kick of a strongly-contested battle against Arsenal to rescue a point against a nine-man defensive system deployed by Mikel Arteta, following Erling Haaland’s opener and responses from Riccardo Calafiori and Gabriel.

In all competitions, it was a Carabao Cup tie that tested Manchester City, as Pep Guardiola heavily rotated his starting line-up after 49 hours’ rest from the meeting with Arsenal to defeat Watford 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium.

Erling Haaland is expected to return this weekend and is no doubt the player to watch in the north-east following 10 goals in the opening weeks of the new season, with the Norwegian having returned to Norway for personal reasons.

As for Eddie Howe and his Newcastle team, the Magpies will be looking to return to winning ways this weekend having recorded their first defeat of the new season, falling 3-1 to an impressive Fulham team at Craven Cottage.

Team News

This week has been largely dominated by developments concerning Rodri‘s injury sustained in last weekend’s 2-2 draw against Arsenal, with Manchester City themselves since confirming that the Spaniard has sustained ligament damage in his right knee.

It remains unknown as to how long the 28-year-old will be ruled out of action for, but some reports have already indicated that Manchester City may be about to succumb to the prospect of losing arguably their most integral player for the remainder of the season.

Two other players that are guaranteed to be ruled out of this weekend’s clash with Newcastle United are Nathan Ake (hamstring) and Oscar Bobb (bone fracture), with both men not expected to return to pitch action until at least after the October international break.

Kevin De Bruyne remains a doubt for the weekend’s meeting against Newcastle, with Pep Guardiola expected to provide an update and further clarity on the Belgian’s availability when he addresses the media on Friday afternoon.

As for Newcastle, the hosts are expected to have four of their own first-team squad ruled out through relatively long-term problems, as all of Sven Botman, Jamaal Lascelles, Callum Wilson, and Lewis Miley will play no part on Saturday.

Additional updates from Eddie Howe are expected when he takes on his pre-match press conference on Friday.

Head To Head

Newcastle United and Manchester City have gone head-to-head a total of 192 times in their long-standing histories, with the latter having registered 78 wins, 41 contests ending in a draw, and the Magpies emerging victorious on 73 occasions.

The most-recent meeting between the two clubs at St James’ Park and in Premier League action saw Oscar Bobb score a late winning-goal, having combined with the returning Kevin De Bruyne, following the Belgian’s long-term recovery process from hamstring surgery.

Bernardo Silva opened the scoring last January, before two quick-fire goals from Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon moved Newcastle into the advantage. However, a remarkable comeback courtesy of Kevin De Bruyne and Oscar Bobb would rescue all three points.

The aforementioned Portugal international scored a brace in their most recent meeting, as two goals from Bernardo Silva recorded an FA Cup quarter-final victory at the Etihad Stadium to set-up a semi-final clash against Chelsea at Wembley Stadium.

Newcastle have won just one of their last 33 Premier League games against Manchester City (D5, L27), in a 2-1 home win in January 2019 under Rafael Benitez.
