Burnley will fancy their chances of earning automatic promotion after Sheffield United slipped to defeat against table-topping Leeds United on Monday.

The Blades’ 3-1 home defeat at the hands of the Whites means the Clarets are just two points off Chris Wilder’s men in second spot with 12 games remaining of the season, with the battle for places in the Premier League heating up.

With such consistency provided in the Championship, Burnley will be hugely confident in making a late charge for the top two and securing their place back in the Premier League at the first time of asking.

One player who has featured and contributed heavily to such a successful run is Jaidon Anthony, who linked up at Turf Moor on loan from Premier League outfit Bournemouth at the beginning of the season.

The loanee has been one of the first names on the teamsheet, starting every league game since October 2024.

Such a successful loan signing so far, Burnley have an obligation to buy Anthony should they get back to the big time, posing an interesting question of whether the 25-year-old has the attributes to be a force in the Premier League.

Football League World’s Burnley fan pundit has weighed in with his thoughts on the scenario, and whether Anthony deserves to keep his starting spot in the top-flight, should promotion be achieved.

Burnley advised not to offer PL starting spot to Jaidon Anthony

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Burnley fan pundit Will Lancaster doesn’t hold hope that Jaidon Anthony can cut it in the Premier League, based off his previous experiences at Bournemouth.

Lancaster said: “I do think Anthony's a good player, but you have to look at the underlying reasons that he was in Bournemouth’s team when they first went up under Parker and didn’t really contribute that much, even though they stayed up, and then they got Iraola in at the start of last season and he didn’t fancy him, sent him out on loan to Leeds, and then he didn’t get gametime against the likes of Summerville, Rutter either.

“Summerville hasn’t done much in the Premier League this season and Anthony couldn’t get ahead of Gnonto, who is still in the Championship, and then they loaned him out to us.

“So from that, I’m not sure he’d be good enough to start in the Premier League, but I’d certainly take him as an option as a back-up winger on the left-hand side and hope Luca Koleosho can do something on the left as he has looked better in the Premier League than the Championship.

“If we go up we’ll obviously get Marcus Edwards and Manuel Benson on the right, so I’d certainly take him (Anthony) as a squad option, but whether he’s good enough to be starting I’m not overly convinced.”

Jaidon Anthony will have to fight for PL starting place

If Jaidon Anthony can continue to impress and regularly contribute with goals and assists for the remainder of the season, then he will surely get his chance to start at the beginning of the new Premier League season, should that be enough to see Burnley return to the promised land.

If this does happen, Anthony will have to be prepared to scrap for a starting spot and will need to transition the confidence he’s picked up in the second tier immediately into the top-flight to earn a consistent run of starts.

It would be the wideman’s place to seemingly lose in the Premier League, and he will have to do all he can to prove the doubters wrong to finally be a success at the top of the English game.
