The difficult start to the 2025 Major League Soccer season continues for New York City FC when the Boys in Blue head back out to California. After spending the majority of the preseason in the Golden State, the Bronx team will return to face Los Angeles FC. The two last met in a friendly in 2023, but the last competitive fixture in MLS was in 2021, when LAFC won 2-1.
In all three MLS games, NYCFC has lost one and then split the points in the others. As such, the Pigeons will try to get their first regular season win over the Black and Gold. It will be challenging, for they will be playing against a team that finished first in the Western Conference in two of the last three years. Plus, LAFC has talented attackers like Denis Bouanga and Olivier Giroud.
However, NYCFC has their own star forward. Alonso Martínez has turned into one of the more talented strikers in MLS after he scored 16 goals in the 2024 regular season. He has already scored his first MLS goal in 2025 after scoring last weekend against Miami.
Still, the Boys in Blue struggle on the road, which increases the challenge of playing away at LAFC. Head Coach Pascal Jansen is still tweaking his Starting XI and trying to see which Homegrown and younger players are ready to play more minutes with NYCFC.

If NYCFC fans cannot watch or listen to the game, then they can follow along via MLS Soccer’s timeline and NYCFC’s X account. Additionally, the club will post updates here and there on Bluesky and Facebook.
When the Pigeons play LAFC, they will reunite with their former player, Maxime Chanot. The center-back missed the first game for the California team, so fans will have to wait and see whether he will be available. It will be interesting to see how he and the players he knew interact with one another, for Chanot’s departure from NYCFC was full of controversy.
