OH Leuven have added to their forward line with the loan acquisition of Jovan Mijatovic (19) from New York City FC in the MLS.
The American club paid no less than 8 million euros for the young talent last year, although he has admittedly struggled in the US – scoring just once last season. OHL are having a hard time scoring goals this season, and hope to better this with both the signings of Lequincio Zeefuik and Mijatovic.
Jovan Mijatovic started his career at Red Star Belgrade. He made a splash there with ten goals and three assists in 36 matches at the age of 17, earning him a transfer to New York FC last year. Mijatovic is also a regular for Serbia U21s.
CEO Frédéric Van den Steen was very happy with the young attacker’s loan deal until the end of the season:
“Jovan Mijatovic is considered an exceptional talent. He is very hungry to show himself in a strong competition and to prove to the City Group that they were right to pay so much money for him. He showed in the talks that we had a lot of desire for him. With his arrival we have an extra asset in the attacking compartment, because he can be played both as a striker and on the wing. I look forward to seeing him play in the shirt of OH Leuven!”
The Serbian striker can’t wait to start his adventure in Leuven. “I’m really happy to be here and I’m really looking forward to getting started. I’ve thought carefully about what would be the best choice for my career and I think OH Leuven is the right club for me to develop at this moment. I called Stefan Mitrovic almost every day and asked him all sorts of questions about the club and the league. He was very positive and encouraged me to take this step. My main goal is of course to score goals. But above all, I want to help the team win and get points.”
