Eagles continue upturn in performances with 3-1 victory against rivals

Oliver Glasner hailed Ismaila Sarr’s two-goal display against Brighton — but insisted the Crystal Palace man was not signed as a replacement for Michael Olise.

Palace sold Olise to Bayern Munich for around £51million in the summer after the French international took his game to new heights for the Eagles last season.

Senegal winger Sarr was signed from Marseille for £12.7m in August, and the ex-Watford man scored twice on Sunday as Palace earned a 3-1 away win against bitter rivals Brighton as they moved up to 15th in the Premier League table by extending their unbeaten run to five matches.

“He’s different,” said Glasner when asked to compare Sarr to Olise. “We knew that we couldn’t replace Michael one-for-one, because he’s got his own profile and his own qualities.

“Ismaila is more of a direct runner with a lot of pace. We knew if we get him into the right areas in the right moment he will get chances to score goals.

“I don’t think it was his best performance. He had fantastic performances in other games. He was always a very positive impact at the beginning of the season as a substitute, so he could have six or seven assists as well. Sometimes we missed the chances.

“He’s getting better and better. But now is not the time for him to relax. He shows why we signed him and he gets all the credit.”

Glasner was delighted by his side’s victory, in which Trevoh Chalobah gave the Eagles the lead and they went into a 3-0 lead before captain Marc Guehi scored a freakish own-goal late on.

“It was a very positive performance and a big win, because we know how big this game is for our fans,” said an upbeat Glasner.

“Our fans always supported us when we had a bad start in the Premier League and lost many games. It is a chance for us to give them a first Christmas gift.”
