Mathias Pogba has been sentenced to three years in prison – two of which are suspended – for his role in an extortion case targeting his brother Paul.
The verdict was delivered by a French court on Thursday, alongside sentences for five other individuals involved in the plot.
The case dates back to March 2022. Paul Pogba was informed by the Paris prosecutor’s office that he had been subjected to extortion attempts by a group of childhood acquaintances.
The gang coerced him into paying €100,000 (£86,000) as part of their demands. They threatened and attempted to tarnish the footballer’s reputation.
Mathias Pogba was placed under formal investigation. He has now been found guilty of organised extortion and attempted extortion. He was also fined €20,000.
The court also handed down varying prison terms to the other defendants, ranging from four to eight years.
Paul Pogba has endured a turbulent period on and off the pitch in recent years, with injuries and controversies impacting his career.
The former Manchester United midfielder was found guilty of doping in 2023. He was initially handed a four-year ban from all football activities before it was reduced to 18 months on appeal earlier this year.
Pogba has been linked with several clubs, including Olympique Marseille, with France teammate Adil Rami urging him to join the club.
There were rumours linking him with Premier League champions Manchester City, but they quickly subsided.
He will likely move to the Saudi Pro League following the termination of his deal with Juventus.
