In his final game for the club, Alexandre Lacazette was given the perfect send off as he scored a brace including his 200th goal for the club to secure all three points. After Le Havre’s late winner, this was enough to secure Lyon’s place in European competition next season.

The match

Rayan Cherki almost opened the scoring after dribbling into the area from a short corner, but his deflected effort whistled narrowly wide. Les Gones had lots of set pieces in the early stages but with some questionable routines failed to take advantage.

Ainsley Matiland-Niles should’ve given Lyon the lead following a flick on from Lacazette. However, his effort was blocked and the ball eventually fell to Jordan Veretout and with the goal at his mercy, he fired over.

Lacazette had the opportunity to score his 200th and potentially final goal for OL but he couldn’t connect with Cherki’s lofted cross. The Lyon captain soon had another opportunity from Niakhaté’s cross, but Zinga was down bravely at his feet to thwart his effort.

History was made in the second half as Lacazette scored his 200th goal for Lyon in his final game for the club. Zinga conceded a penalty after a rash challenge on Fofana and the OL captain made no mistake with the spot kick. The former Arsenal striker doubled his tally as he turned home Cherki’s cross from close range.

Maitland-Niles almost made it three, but was denied by the post from a tight angle after a fizzing cross from Fofana. In the 79th minute, Lacazette was given a standing ovation by fans of OL and a guard of honour by his teammates as he was replaced by Georges Mikautadze.

Cherki believed he had scored Lyon’s third goal of the night but his celebrations were brought to a halt by the offside flag. The attacking midfielder was then brought to tears as he left the field in what is likely to be his last game for OL.

In what is likely to be his final game for his boyhood club, the France U21 international continued to be a threat with his guile and vision in the final third. He created several chances for himself and others on the night – this was rewarded with yet another assist for Lacazette’s second goal.

Thiago Almada – 5

Malick Fofana – 6

Alexandre Lacazette – 7

With three changes going begging beforehand, at the beginning of the second half, the Lyon striker finally had his moment in front of his adoring home crowd as he scored his 200th goal in his final game for his boyhood club from the penalty spot.  It would soon become 201 goals as he turned home Cherki’s cross from close range.

Selected Angers ratings:

Melvin Zinga – 5

In the first half, he debutant stopper repaid the faith shown in him by Alexandre Dujeux, with an impressive performance between the posts. He displayed bravery to deny at the feet of Lacazette, but in the second half his inexperience was punished as he dived in at the feet of Fofana to give away a penalty.

Jordan Lefort – 3
