Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou believes the club should continue to stick to their current strategy despite a challenging season in the Premier League.

Tottenham sit 15th in the Premier League ahead of their clash with Nottingham Forest on Monday but have the chance to salvage a dreadful domestic campaign by winning the Europa League, having made the semi-finals of the competition.

Postecoglou has come under increasing pressure this year but defended the club’s recruitment plan of signing young players and believes it should continue beyond this season.

“I think, irrespective, we should keep building on what we’ve started,” he said.

“We’ve had a clear plan from when we started about the way we were going to play and the kind of squad we were going to have and we’re going to build that squad.

“I don’t think that’s any secret. We’ve gone for a certain age profile and it’s going to be something we need to build on. That should continue and I don’t think they should change.”

Spurs can qualify for the Champions League by winning the Europa League and Postecoglou says that while that could change things slightly, the overall plan will remain the same.

“If we get Champions League football that might accelerate certain things,” he continued.

“We know the demands of European football irrespective of the competition but particularly Europa and the Champions League can have a serious impact on your capabilities as a squad and as a club, not just us but all clubs.

“You can see that the two extra games in Europe which are going to be there consistently now puts extra strain (on teams). That affects the size of your squad and the profile your squad has.

“But for me, it doesn’t really change anything. We need to continue on the strategy we’ve started with. We’ve got a really exciting young squad that I think will continue to improve.

“We’ve obviously had some challenges this year around, particularly injuries, and our ability to cope with European football and domestic.

“I feel we’re in a better place to tackle it next year if we’re in the Champions League but in terms of the overall policy I wouldn’t see any significant change.”
