Our Premier League Team of the Week following the midweek action, featuring Manchester United’s hat-trick hero and Newcastle’s record-chasing frontman.

Goalkeeper: Matz Sels – Nottingham Forest

After a relatively comfortable first half, Sels was forced into regular action after the break to help Nottingham Forest frustrate Liverpool. He made six super stops at the City Ground, including point-blank saves from Diogo Jota and a big hand to paw away Mohamed Salah’s arcing effort. There’s a reason he leads the league for clean sheets and save percentage. Arguably the best shot-stopper in the division this season.

Right-back: Ola Aina – Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest really need to get Ola Aina’s contract situation wrapped up. The right-back has barely faltered this season and there will be a queue of clubs interested in snapping up the 28-year-old as a free agent on this form. Another tidy night’s work saw Aina help Forest fight to a point against Liverpool. He was not dribbled past all evening and made a crucial goal-saving block on the line late on.

Centre-back: Nathan Ake – Manchester City

Ake carried a City backline that was all at sea in midweek, with the Dutchman’s defending ensuring the champions were not beaten at Brentford. He twice made brilliant clearances off the line, bailing out the Blues who came under real pressure. Guardiola’s side will be disappointed to drop points after leading by two goals, but it could have been much worse had it not been for Ake’s awareness.

Centre-back: Murillo – Nottingham Forest

An outstanding individual outing from a centre-back who is going right to the top. Murillo was magnificent in Nottingham Forest’s draw with Liverpool, boasting a magnetic pull on loose balls into the penalty area. He racked up a mammoth 17 clearances at the City Ground, won four tackles and dominated in his defensive duels (5/6). His aggression and anticipation are top level and Forest fans will know the 22-year-old is set for the Champions League stage. The hope is he can get there in a Forest shirt.

Left-back: Myles Lewis-Skelly – Arsenal

It was an evening to remember for Myles Lewis-Skelly who certainly enjoyed his first experience of the North London derby. The 18-year-old locked down the threat of Dejan Kulusevski and made his presence felt with a crunching challenge on Pape Sarr. Deserved the ovation he received after a second-half substitution.

Midfield: Boubacar Kamara – Aston Villa

There was surprise when Aston Villa allowed Douglas Luiz to leave in the summer, but Boubacar Kamara’s return has filled the void considerably. The Frenchman was everywhere against Everton, with his tactical flexibility and under-the-radar defensive work leading Unai Emery’s side to a 1-0 win. Steven Gerrard is not fondly remembered at Villa Park, but his capture of Kamara on a free transfer was an inspired deal.

Midfield: Declan Rice – Arsenal

Much, much better. Declan Rice delivered an all-action performance when Arsenal needed it this week, as the Gunners closed the gap on Liverpool with a North London derby win. He covered almost every blade of grass, while an excellent corner kick led to his side’s equaliser at the Emirates. After a relative dip by his standards, this was a return to the marauding force of last season.

Midfield: Carlos Soler – West Ham

What a finish! Carlos Soler celebrated his first goal for West Ham as the Irons kickstarted the Graham Potter era with a win over Fulham. The Spaniard has struggled to make an impact on loan from PSG but looks like a potential winner from the change of coach. He worked his socks off for the cause this week and showcased the technical talent that made him sought-after last summer.

Right-wing: Amad Diallo – Manchester United

Amad Diallo is fast becoming Manchester United’s clutch player. After dramatic late goals to earn results against Manchester City and Liverpool, Diallo delivered a 12-minute hat-trick to rescue Ruben Amorim’s side this week. United looked set for a humbling home defeat to bottom-of-the-table Southampton until Amad’s hat-trick heroics turned the game.

Trailing on 82 minutes, he hit his first Premier League treble to take the points.

Left-wing: Antoine Semenyo – Bournemouth

A super showing from Semenyo that showed just why top clubs are taking notice. The Ghana international was unplayable at times during Bournemouth’s draw at Chelsea, with his powerful running and direct play causing problems.

He won the penalty for Justin Kluivert to equalise at Stamford Bridge, before slamming in a thumping goal of his own at the near post. The 24-year-old is an excitement machine.

Forward: Alexander Isak – Newcastle

Alexander Isak just can’t stop scoring.

The Swedish striker made it eight consecutive Premier League games with a goal, with only Ruud van Nistelrooy and Jamie Vardy having ever enjoyed longer streaks. He was the architect of Newcastle’s 3-0 win over Wolves – a club-record ninth in a row.

Isak bagged himself a brace and set up Anthony Gordon for the third, in a display that underlined his status as one of the Premier League’s best.
