One of the many sub-plots to the game between AC Milan and Bologna is the return of Davide Calabria, who will face the club he called his own for so long.
As Quotidiano Sportivo recall, Calabria’s journey took him from the Esordienti at 11 years old, to Virtus Adrense of Brescia, to the captain’s armband of the first team of his boyhood club Milan. From the Scudetto to the Supercoppa. From misunderstandings to jeers. Until the farewell in January.
Calabria spent 18 years at Milan and will return to his ‘home’ tonight. He went to Bologna on loan until the end of the season, and has a contract with the Rossoneri that will expire in June, meaning he will be a free agent.
The defender had already crossed paths with Milan in February, as an opponent at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara, getting a few minutes in a 2-1 win for the home side. Friday will however be a completely different story for the 28-year-old, after a life in red and black.
His story had a difficult ending. In December, under Paulo Fonseca, came a social media outburst: “Enough fake news, I will not allow anyone to undermine the love and commitment for my favourite team.”
In January, under Sergio Conceiçao, they clashed on the field at the end of a win over Parma. Then the last day at Milanello, in tears: “It was a dream, a pride. An indelible story and love.” Milan added: “The memories will last forever.” Now, he hopes to hurt the team he loved for so long.
