Sandro Tonali is once again making headlines in Europe — but for all the right reasons this time.

According to a report from Calciomercato, Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has recommended the Newcastle United midfielder as a priority signing for Los Blancos this summer. The Italian manager, who is expected to depart at the end of the season, reportedly views Tonali as the perfect successor to the retired Toni Kroos.

It is a glowing endorsement. And a reminder of just how far Tonali has come at St James’ Park.

Ancelotti has long admired the 24-year-old’s attributes, having tracked him since his AC Milan days. His belief is that Tonali’s vision, work rate, and tactical intelligence make him an ideal fit for the Bernabéu — especially in a side struggling to re-establish control in midfield following Kroos’ exit.

But this interest only reinforces Tonali’s growing stature at Newcastle.

Despite enduring a difficult start to life on Tyneside — including a 10-month ban for breaching betting rules — Tonali has bounced back superbly. He has become a pivotal figure under Eddie Howe, forming a dynamic midfield trio alongside Bruno Guimarães and Joelinton.

His performances have drawn widespread praise. And lifting the Carabao Cup has only added silverware to what has been a redemption arc in full flight.

Real Madrid are not the only club keeping tabs on Tonali. Juventus are reportedly still keen on bringing him back to Serie A. The Turin giants previously tried to sign him before Newcastle’s £55 million move in 2023.

But Newcastle now hold all the cards. Tonali is settled. The club backed him during his toughest period. And with European football returning to St James’ Park next season, there is no reason for the Italian to consider leaving — especially with Eddie Howe building a squad capable of challenging at the top end of the Premier League.

Tonali’s growing list of admirers is a compliment to the work being done at Newcastle.

When European giants like Real Madrid and Juventus are circling, it means you are doing something right. But with Tonali under a long-term deal and firmly committed to Howe’s project, the Magpies are in no mood to entertain offers — even from the most glamorous of suitors.
