Real Madrid are set to take on Atletico Madrid on Sunday, in what could prove to be a crucial game for Los Blancos as they look to keep up with Barcelona.

The reigning Spanish champions were dealt a massive blow heading into this game, as star player Kylian Mbappe picked up a thigh injury and was ruled out for at least three weeks.

However, there could be positives on other fronts, with The Athletic issuing key updates surrounding the fitness of a few Real Madrid stars.

Carvajal fit to play vs Atletico

As per the report, Carvajal has trained with the group and is fit to play against Atletico Madrid this weekend.

The veteran right-back had missed the Alaves game due to a knock, but his participation against Atleti was never truly in doubt.

Carvajal’s return will serve as a real boost for Real Madrid, as they can now solidify their defensive astuteness on the flanks.

The defender’s vast experience and ability to make marauding runs forward could also help Real Madrid spread out the opposing defence.

Camavinga’s availability to be decided later

While Carvajal looks certain to play against Atletico Madrid, the fate of Eduardo Camavinga is rather undecided.

As per the report, the midfielder has done small-group training and is expected to train more with the group tomorrow.

The Real Madrid team doctors are closely monitoring the player’s fitness and a final decision will only be made on Saturday, although the likelihood is that he will be available.

It was reported earlier that Real Madrid may start with a 4-4-2 against Atleti, due to the absence of Mbappe. Luka Modric, to that end, is likely to start in a four-man Real Madrid midfield.

The presence of Camavinga, to that end, could give Ancelotti more flexibility in terms of his tactical options this weekend.
