Real Madrid find themselves at the centre of yet another refereeing controversy following their hard-fought victory over Valencia.
The match, which temporarily elevated Carlo Ancelotti’s side to the top of the league table, has left the club fuming over several decisions they believe went against them.
The club’s grievances stem from three key incidents during the match. Firstly, they argue that there was a clear foul on Rodrygo in the build-up to Valencia’s opening goal, which the referee failed to call.
Secondly, they have raised concerns about the penalty missed by Jude Bellingham, which they believe should have been retaken due to the Valencia goalkeeper, Dimitrievski, being off his line.
Lastly, the expulsion of Vinicius Jr. has caused significant outrage, as Real Madrid argue that the VAR ignored the provocation from the Valencia goalkeeper that led to the Brazilian’s reaction.
Adding fuel to the fire, Real Madrid TV has now spotlighted another contentious moment from the match – Kylian Mbappe’s disallowed goal for offside.
The French forward’s strike, which would have levelled the score at 1-1 in the 59th minute, was initially awarded but later ruled out following a VAR review using semi-automatic offside technology.
“If we analyse the images, and taking into account who runs the CTA, who produces the images of the VAR System and who is the head of the VAR, there are serious doubts about the correct application of the tool,” read a statement.
“The frame chosen by Muniz Ruiz, one of the referees on Medina Cantalejo’s guard corps, to show the play and justify Mbappe’s supposedly incorrect position.”
The club’s official channel has even highlighted a frontal image captured from the stands, suggesting that Mbappé was onside when Bellingham made the pass.
This image appears to show Valencia’s Dimitri Foulquier playing Mbappe onside, contradicting the VAR decision. Additionally, a refereeing analysis platform has supported this claim, stating that the angle used by the VAR may have been incorrect.
Real Madrid’s protests underline their growing frustration with officiating decisions this season, and it seems their campaign for accountability is far from over.
