Liverpool’s Interest in Maksimovic: Move For Summer Transfer Window?

The transfer rumour mill is in full swing as Liverpool and Aston Villa find themselves linked with Red Star Belgrade’s rising star, Andrija Maksimovic. At just 17, the attacking midfielder has already showcased his talent on the European stage, featuring in Red Star’s Champions League campaign and contributing seven goals across all competitions this season. With the transfer deadline looming, speculation continues over whether Liverpool will make a move now or wait until the summer.

Interest From Europe’s Elite

Maksimovic’s agent, Zoran Stojadinovic, has confirmed the growing interest in his client, stating: “It’s no secret, there are some [offers].” He further elaborated: “Liverpool are among them, Aston Villa, Leipzig and Atletico Madrid, so all the clubs from the top leagues have shown serious interest.”

The financial aspect of the deal remains a crucial factor, with the Serbian club seemingly unwilling to part ways with their young talent for anything less than their valuation. Stojadinovic highlighted this by explaining: “And then we get to whether the price is €12million [£10m] or €20m [£16.7m], so they say ‘let’s see if it’s €20m by June’.”

Given Red Star’s stance, it’s clear that Maksimovic will not be a bargain signing. If the price had been lower, Stojadinovic suggests the deal might already have been completed: “If the price was €10m [£8.4m] and he could go, Maksimovic would have already been sold.”

Aston Villa’s Advantage?

Aston Villa could hold a slight edge in negotiations, given their recent dealings with Red Star. Their acquisition of right-back Kosta Nedeljkovic in January 2024 demonstrates an existing relationship between the two clubs, which might facilitate a deal. If Villa decide to push forward before the deadline, they could secure Maksimovic’s signature without competition from Liverpool, who appear unlikely to make a move until the summer.

Liverpool’s Transfer Strategy

Liverpool’s current stance on transfers has been made clear by manager Arne Slot. Speaking to BBC Sport, he addressed concerns over the club’s lack of activity in the market: “Liverpool should always be competing for a league title, we should always be competing for the Champions League. I’m hoping I will be able to keep the club at that level.”

Slot reassured fans that plans are in place for future strengthening: “I know people sometimes question this because they haven’t seen us doing a lot in the transfer market in the summer and now in the winter as well. There’s a reason for that – because we’re happy with the squad. But I do know we’re definitely working on strengthening in the summer.”

Name To Watch

Barring a last-minute change of plans, Liverpool are unlikely to make a move for Maksimovic before the transfer window shuts. This leaves Villa with an open path to complete a deal. However, if the Serbian youngster continues his rapid development, there’s every chance he will remain on Liverpool’s radar for a summer transfer.

For now, Maksimovic remains a name worth watching. Whether it’s Villa securing a deadline day deal or Liverpool making their move in the summer, this saga is far from over.
