Inter Milan have breathed a sigh of relief after Hakan Calhanoglu suffered another injury setback while on international duty with Turkey.
According to Sky Sports journalist Matteo Barzaghi via FCInter1908, test results revealed the extent of the damage, though it appears less severe than initially feared.
It’s been a rough season for Hakan Calhanoglu so far.
The 30-year-old struggled with fatigue in the early stages of Inter’s Serie A title defense.
His fitness problems culminated on October 20 as Simone Inzaghi had to take him off after only 12 minutes against Roma.
Indeed, Calhanoglu sustained a thigh injury at the Stadio Olimpico.
That forced him to stay on the sidelines for nearly two weeks.
He was unavailable for selection in three consecutive games between the UEFA Champions League and Serie A.
But he returned to full fitness on the brink of the international break, making long-awaited starts against Arsenal and Napoli.
After passing fit to feature in back-to-back matches for the club, Calhanoglu linked up with Turkey last week.
Vincenzo Montella’s captain had to come off already in the first half during Turkey’s 0-0 home draw against Wales.
However, despite concerns that he may have aggravated his thigh issue, initial reports suggest the injury isn’t that severe.
Nonetheless, Calhanoglu will stay on the sidelines when the Crescent-Stars meet Montenegro on Tuesday as a precaution.
Subsequently, he will return to Inter for further checks.
But he will unlikely feature in the upcoming league encounter against Hellas Verona.
Inter boss Simone Inzaghi already has a replacement in place.
Indeed, Kristjan Asllani will likely fill the vacancy at Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi for only his second Serie A start this term.
Despite Inter’s request to have Calhanoglu back early, the ex-AC Milan star will remain with the national team until Wednesday.
