The January window will be pivotal for Roma not only because of possible reinforcements but also for director Florent Ghisolfi. He is under heaving scrutiny after most of his summer purchases didn’t pan out, Sportitalia reports.
Among their new signings, especially the expensive ones, only Manu Koné has been consistently good. Artem Dovbyk has been up and down, while Matias Soulé and Enzo Le Fée have struggled to convince their three coaches to give them minutes. Mats Hummels needed a lot of time to round into form, while Mario Hermoso hasn’t yet.
According to Il Tempo (via Europa Calcio), Ghisolfi will look to fix the Roma squad through multiple January additions. The right wing remains a priority despite Alexis Saelemaekers’ return. The Giallorossi have shortlisted Rayo Vallecano’s Andrei Ratiu, who’s in demand, and Freiburg’s Killian Sildillia. The former has a €25M release clause.
The exec will have to decide what to do with Lorenzo Pellegrini, Le Fée, Samuel Dahl, and Tommaso Baldanzi and possibly recoup some money. Instead, Claudio Ranieri stated that he wants to keep Hummels, Paredes, Stephan El Shaarawy, and Paulo Dybala, and not just past the next window.
He’s at risk not only for the subpar acquisitions but also because the Giallorossi will have to hire a new CEO at some point. He may come in with one or two associates who will help him tend to the transfer market, divesting the current exec, either immediately or eventually. They surely need a more streamlined decision-making process. Hopefully, Ranieri will help with that thanks to his hybrid role.
