Fiorentina recorded a 3-1 away victory over Inter to move to within one point of third-placed Roma ahead of the final day meeting between the two sides. Meanwhile, Sampdoria’s relegation from Serie A Femminile was confirmed with a narrow home defeat against Como.
Here, we will round up all the latest action from the penultimate weekend of the Serie A Femminile season.
Fiorentina kept their top three hopes alive with a successful outing against Inter. The visitors had to come from behind after they conceded in the eighth minute. Irene Santi fired the ball into the far corner after being teed up by Matilde Pavan’s layoff. The visitors restore parity courtesy of Verónica Boquete’s effort just after the half-hour mark. The forward controlled Agnese Bonfantini’s pass with her left foot, before she drilled the ball home with her right. Bonfantini quickly provided another assist for Emma Snerle to complete the first half turnaround.
Boquete went on to grab her second inside the opening 15 minutes of the second period. The 38-year-old collected the ball from a short corner, and set it out of her feet to thump a right-footed shot past Rachele Baldi at the near post. Fiorentina were dealt a setback when Bonfantini was sent off in the 70th minute for two bookable offences. However, the visitors ultimately stood firm to see out the remainder of the contest to claim back-to-back victories.
Roma gave up a three-goal lead to drop two points in their meeting with AC Milan. Valentina Giacinti opened the scoring in the fifth minute, before Manuela Giugliano kept her cool from the penalty spot to give her side a two-goal cushion at the break. Kathrine Møller Kühl added a third within two minutes of the restart. The 21-year-old collected the ball inside the box, shifted it out of her feet and guided it into the bottom corner to register her first Serie A Femminile goal.
However, just as Milan appeared to be down and out, Małgorzata Mesjasz headed in from a corner to spark hopes of a fightback. Those aspirations became a realistic possibility when Evelyn Ijeh tapped in from Giorgia Arrigoni’s squared pass to reduce the deficit to one. Sensationally, Ijeh completed the dramatic comeback in the second minute of stoppage time. The attacker latched onto a long ball forward, before she drove inside from the right flank to create the space to rifle a left-foot shot into the top corner.
The game marked the end of Milan’s campaign, with the draw taking them to 35 points from 26 matches. Meanwhile, Roma will have to avoid defeat in their final game against Fiorentina if they are to secure European qualification.
Sampdoria’s relegation was confirmed with a defeat in Saturday’s home clash with Como. The basement side got off to the perfect start courtesy of Marta Llopis Álvarez’s early opener. The 23-year-old lashed home a first-time shot to score in back-to-back matches. However, Como managed to restore through Nadine Nischler’s 35th-minute effort. The attacker went on to grab her and Como’s second goal in the 80th minute. Nischler received the ball just inside the box, before she calmly steered a right-foot shot beyond Amanda Tampieri. Samdporia were unable to produce a response, as they fell to a narrow defeat that has left them four points adrift of safety with one game left to play. As a result, they are guaranteed to be playing in the second tier.
Lazio wrapped up their campaign with a dominant display against Sassuolo. After playing out a goalless first half, Lazio moved through the gears in the second period to net three goals in eight minutes. Clarisse Le Bihan opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Martina Fusini was penalised for a foul. Elisabetta Oliviero then conjured up a stunning effort to make it two, cutting inside onto her right foot before firing it out of Lia Lonni’s reach. Just moments later, Le Bihan netted her second goal of the game to take her overall tally to 11 league goals for the season.
Martina Piemonte got in on the act in the closing stages, netting two late goals to take Lazio’s tally to five. Piemonte produced a deft header from Oliviero’s cross, before she drove a low free-kick into the bottom corner. As a result, Piemonte finished the campaign with 16 league goals as her side celebrated five consecutive victories.
