Over the past week or so, there has been a lot of speculations surrounding the future of FC Barcelona defender Eric Garcia.
With the Blaugrana needing to free up salary space to sign Marcus Rashford, the 24-year-old appeared the likely candidate to be sacrificed by the club.
Garcia, for his part, has been attracting strong interest from Girona in La Liga and Como in Serie A, with both clubs submitting offers for him.
In fact, Como had former Barcelona captain and legend Sergi Roberto, who plays for them, call Garcia to convince him to make the switch.
An agreement was very close but the situation changed after the defender’s game-changing cameo against SL Benfica, as reported on Thursday.
Now, speaking to the media, Como manager Cesc Fabregas has outright confirmed that a move for Eric Garcia is off and that the Barcelona defender will not be joining them this window.
“Eric Garcia won’t join us, no chance, especially after the goal he has scored against Benfica,” said the former Barcelona midfielder, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano.
Barça manager Hansi Flick is understood to have played a major role in securing Garcia’s continuity at the club.
The German tactician had a chat with the former Manchester City ace after the win against Benfica and explained to him that he is a valuable member of the team and has a part to play, convincing him to stay at least until the end of the season.
Garcia has made 17 appearances so far this season, scoring two and assisting one goal in the process.
Flick values the Spanish international for his versatility, as he can be an option at centre-back or defensive midfield, while being able to fill in at right-back if needed.
