After suffering an injury in training, Marcus Rashford might not have the opportunity to play for Aston Villa ever again.

The 27-year-old is an academy product of Manchester United who rose through the ranks to become one of the most influential players at the club over the past eight years.

However, the Englishman found himself an outcast at Ruben Amorim’s court. The Portuguese dropped him from the squad ahead of the Manchester Derby in mid-December, and he never got the opportunity to play for his beloved club ever again.

Rashford joined Aston Villa on loan in January, swiftly becoming a regular starter in Unai Emery’s lineup. He contributed with two goals and as many assists in 10 Premier League appearances, and also produced solid displays in his four Champions League outings.

However, the striker was nowhere to be seen ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final clash against Crystal Palace. Emery later confirmed that the player had sustained an injury in training that will ‘keep him out for weeks’.

While it remains to be seen how long Rashford will remain on the sidelines, Sky Sports explains why we may have already seen the last of him in an Aston Villa jersey.

The Villains will play Fulham (May 3) and Bournemouth (May 10) in their next two outings, and the England international is unlikely to take part in either contest.

Afterwards, Villa will host Tottenham in the penultimate weekend of the Premier League, and this represents the player’s last opportunity to feature this season, as the rules prevent him from playing against Man Utd on the final day of the season.

Moreover, Rashford’s future remains completely vague at this stage. Villa have the option to buy him for £40 million, but this will largely depend on whether they manage to secure a spot in next season’s Champions League.

On the other hand, United have no desire to reinstate the player in their plans, as a reconciliation with Amorim remains off the cards.
