Only for a quickfire Alexander Isak to put United 2-1 up at the break.

A stunning team move saw Sandro Tonali make the game safe, scoring a third only six minutes into the second half.

A deserved win but what about the individuals?

Match ratings

Dubravka – 6

Had a reasonably quiet afternoon.

My unease about the Slovakian perfectly summed up by that great save from Harwood-Bellis’ bicycle kick, made possible because he’d failed to claim the cross that led to it

Lewis Hall – 6

Steady away, didn’t do anything wrong.

Dan Burn – 7

Defended really well, made some fantastic challenges at 3-1, the one from big Onuachu a quarter of an hour from the end preventing a certain goal.

Fabian Schar – 5

It doesn’t feel like Fab’s at the races just now.

He no doubt breathed a hefty sigh of relief when VAR intervened late on to disallow Fernandes’ effort.

Tino Livramento – 7

A very composed and accomplished performance, made some great interceptions and got forward plenty to support Murphy.

Joelinton – 7

Put himself about and made a total nuisance of himself but I thought there were some wayward passes from the big Brazilian today.

Unlucky not to score, hitting the post in the first half and having one blocked more or less on the line in the second half.

Sandro Tonali – 8

Tenacious and committed, covered every blade of grass in that deeper role.

And, what a finish to make it 3-1, showing great composure when through on goal.

Bruno Guimaraes – 7

Another very good game, getting further up the pitch and industrious with it.

Looks much better with Tonali sitting in behind.

Anthony Gordon – 7

Always willing and a great outlet to have wide left.

A great assist for Tonali’s goal and a little later showed great awareness to unselfishly cut the ball back for Joelinton, who was unlucky.

Alexander Isak – 9

My MOTM.

Isak was unplayable and got a brace.

He won the penalty and was coolness personified in dispatching it.

His second was a brilliant finish and it put us ahead after losing that early goal.

It’s often said that Alex needs to be in the game to be effective and that was definitely the case today, great hold up play and so many deft touches to play others in.

Jacob Murphy – 6

I’m still not convinced about Jacob’s decision making, although his assist for Isak’s second was decent, and he was unlucky when his shot rattled off the foot of the post in the second half.

None were on the pitch long enough to rate.

However, a special mention for wor Miggy, who was rightly serenaded by the travelling hordes.

It’s a pity he couldn’t score after that mazy, slalom run, but it was on his right foot, so hardly a surprise.
