Russell Martin previously led Southampton to Premier League promotion in 2024.
Southampton are weighing up an approach to bring Russell Martin back to the club as manager ahead of their Championship return amid Leeds United interest.
According to GiveMeSport, the Saints are giving serious consideration to going back to the 39-year-old after his dismissal from the club last December.
However, Martin is likely to have plenty of suitors this summer, including a potential move to replace Daniel Farke as Leeds manager at Elland Road.
The ex-Southampton boss previously led the club to promotion to the Premier League in 2024, at the expense of the Yorkshire outfit in the play-off final.
Martin is currently out of work at the moment, having yet to find a new role in management after his sacking by Southampton.
However, his next move could yet be a return to St. Mary’s, with the Saints reportedly considering an approach to bring him back this summer.
Ivan Juric replaced Martin, but a terrible run of form led to both the club’s relegation and his dismissal earlier this month.
But Leeds are also weighing up a possible move to appoint the former Norwich City player, in the event they sack Farke.
It’s understood that Martin is open-minded about his next managerial role, with GiveMeSport also previously linking the coach with Leicester City as well.
It was reported by The Athletic earlier this week that Leeds are leaning towards retaining Farke for another season after he guided the club to automatic promotion at the second attempt.
Martin oversaw 33 victories from his 72 matches in charge at Southampton before being dismissed midway through the season.
His side finished fourth in the Championship table in his first campaign as manager, with the team securing promotion via the play-offs.
But they were bottom of the Premier League when he was dismissed last December, overseeing just one win in the division before his departure.
Southampton will be hoping Martin can once again guide the team to the top flight, should he return to St. Mary’s.
Martin is going to be in demand this summer because of his proven track record in the Championship.
While it didn’t work out for him in the Premier League, he is a coach with an attacking philosophy that makes him an attractive appointment in the second division.
Clubs like West Brom and Norwich City are also looking for a new manager, and a return to Carrow Road could be tempting.
But if Southampton can convince him to return, then it could prove a very smart move in their bid to fight for promotion next season.
