As per a report from French journalist Loic Tanzi who works for publication L’Equipe, Tottenham Hotspur have bid £20 million pounds for Burnley central defender Maxime Esteve — though the Championship side are said to want 30 million pounds for his services.
The 22-year old has been part of a Burnely side who are putting up simply unprecedented defensive numbers in the second tier. At the moment, the Clarets have conceded just nine goals in their 30 games. They are on track to concede fewer goals than Chelsea 04/05 (15) despite playing eight more games over the course of the season. They have not conceded a goal since the 21st of December, playing eight games since then.
It has been thanks in no small part to Esteve, whom has started every single game so far, and all but 83 of the possible minutes he could have played. He is also a part of the same France U21 side as the likes of Mathys Tel.
Despite standing at around 6’4 tall, Esteve is a very quick player, whom can cover lots of ground — making him a good fit for an Ange Postecoglu side. To give a comparison, he is quite similar stylistically to Micky van de Ven, and is also left footed.
There is no doubt he is a very good player, though £30 million pounds would be very steep. Spurs paid around £24m before any add ons for Wilson Odobert, you’d be surprised to see if they pay any more than that for Esteve.
That deal for Odobert — another France U21 team mate of Esteve and nee team mate Tel — shows the two clubs are happy to do business together. It will be interesting to see if anything comes of this.
Although you can never have too much depth in this Spurs squad, it feels a bit of a surprise to see them go for a centre half after the acquisition of Kevin Danso from RC Lens. They did bid for Marc Guehi — however that now appears to have been before the signing of Danso was made.
The reality is that, even if things do advance, any potential deal still may not happen. There are only a few hours left of the transfer window, and anything would need to be done very quickly. It will certainly be an interesting few hours whatever happens from here on in.
