In a remarkable show of dedication, Celtic FC Foundation supporter, Des Tinney is preparing to embark on the journey of a lifetime along the historic Camino de Santiago trail.

The Camino is a legendary pilgrimage which is traditionally walked but Des has decided to take it on in a way that stays true to his passion for running.

His challenge will see him cover around 500 miles over the span of a couple of weeks, running approximately 50 kilometres (33 miles) each day. Des has spent the last 20 months in training, which has seen him cover ground throughout Falkirk, Glasgow, Girvan, and even venturing further afield to the Lake District, as well as racking up some miles on both the Pacific Crest Trail and the Appalachian Trail in the US.

Now, he’s ready to take on the Camino, carrying everything he’ll need in a solitary backpack and stopping only for food and rest.

Reflecting on the inspiration behind his decision, Des shared: "I want to experience the Camino in a way that is true to me, and as someone who thrives on physical and mental challenges, running it feels like the right approach.

“It’s going to test my endurance and mind-set, but it’s also a chance to raise funds for Celtic FC Foundation and contribute to their incredible work."

In preparation for this challenge, Des has completed several long-distance runs, one being the John Muir Way. This saw him run a staggering 148 miles across three days, including a quick stop at Celtic’s Lennoxtown Training Ground, where he officially launched his plans for the Camino.

Discussing his preparations and the enormity of the task ahead, Des said: "It’s taken months of planning and training, but I feel ready for the challenge. I’ve pushed myself during training – from long canal runs to Munro bagging, to mixing in miles on pilgrim routes and further afield in the US.

“The physical aspect is daunting but I’m equally focused on the mental side. Running the Camino will be a test, but it’s also an opportunity for reflection and growth."

We also have a group of other supporters who will be walking the final 116km of the famous Camino route over five days next month, to raise funds for the Foundation.

Des shared how the presence of fellow Celtic fans embarking on their own Camino challenge will serve as an additional source of motivation, saying: "The fact there will be a group of Celtic fans walking the Camino at the same time as my challenge is taking place will only drive me further on, with the hopes of meeting the group on the outskirts of Santiago.”

Des’ efforts will support the vital work of Celtic FC Foundation, and he hopes others will join him in making a difference.

He added: "I don’t see myself as an adventurer or a pilgrim just yet, but I’m stepping out of my comfort zone for a cause that means a lot to me. If I can raise funds and awareness for the Foundation, then the challenge will be worth it."
