Bayer Leverkusen had an opportunity to close the gap to leaders Bayern Munich prior to their Topspiel against Borussia Dortmund, but Xabi Alonso’s side were unable to break down a defensively resilient Union Berlin side.

When asked whether or not the Bundesliga title race is over, Alonso said: “The feeling right now is that it’s more difficult. We had a clear situation, and now we have to wait.

“But yes, we had an opportunity today and we missed it, but we still have five games. But the current feeling isn’t euphoria. We need to wait and see but we’re ready for everything and need to accept it.”

An afternoon to forget for Alonso and Leverkusen

Bayer Leverkusen dominated but looked incredibly tired and devoid of ideas. There was some good news though. After almost five weeks on the sidelined, Florian Wirtz returned to the pitch but was unable to influence the game with the 35 minute he was awarded.
