Which players have scored the fastest ever goals in Premier League history?
Abdoulaye Doucouré joined the ranks of the swiftest goal scorers in the competition after finding the net in the 10th second of Everton‘s clash with Leicester City on Saturday.
The attacking midfielder is now fourth on the list of fastest goals in the Premier League era, but he also set three records with his early strike.
It was the quickest goal ever scored by a home team in the competition, the fastest-ever goal scored at Goodison Park and the fastest-ever goal scored by an Everton player.
Doucouré has knocked Christian Eriksen out of the top five quickest goals, but who else resides in the top quintet?
Alan Shearer scored 260 goals in the Premier League, but the quickest of the lot was gifted to him by Manchester City goalkeeper Carlo Nash in 2003.
The visitors played the ball all the way back to the netminder from the kick off, but a poor first touch was the trigger for Shearer to chase him down. The Newcastle United striker blocked his clearance and passed it into an empty. Nash futilely dove on the ground, but the Geordie legend was never going to miss from that range.
Doucouré hadn’t scored in the Premier League all season before Leicester City came to town. From the kickoff Everton played the ball back to Jordan Pickford, who launched it up the other end. The midfielder latched onto it before cutting through a sleepy backline and puncturing the net. Route one football at its most effective. Bosh.
Not typically known for his goal scoring prowess, Ledley King made history in 2000 when he scored the then-fastest goal in Premier League history.
The Spurs centre-back took the kickoff against Bradford before roaming forward and claiming a second ball. He was left in acres of space, so he tried his luck by having a pop at goal from range. It was a pretty tame effort, but his shot deflected off one of the defenders, fooling goalkeeper Matt Clarke as it bobbled in.
The Bantams had the last laugh, though, as Benito Carbone equalised in the 89th minute of an entertaining 3-3 draw.
All of the other goals on this list were either the result of dumb luck or a hail mary punt, but Bournemouth breached Arsenal’s net straight from the kickoff with a brilliantly coordinated move in 2023.
The Cherries had six men on the halfway line ready to burst forward as the game started. The ball was swung out to Dango Ouattara, whose low cross somehow dumbfounded the Gunners defence and found a waiting Philip Billing to tap home.
It was a stunning opening few seconds to a game which paired the Premier League title challengers against a side second from bottom in the table. Arsenal did manage to turn the tie around in the end thanks to Reiss Nelson’s incredible 97th-minute winner.
Shane Long won’t go down as a Premier League great, but he is the owner of possibly the most unbreakable record in the competition’s history.
Like Shearer, the Irishman blocked a clearance after closing down the opposition. He was through on goal but still had plenty to do, with a Watford defender on his back and the goalkeeper in front of him. But Long deftly chipped Ben Foster to score just a shade under eight seconds into the game – the fastest ever goal of the Premier League era.
It’s hard to see anyone doing it quicker than that, but you never know what this sport has in store.
