RB Leipzig faced another slump in Bundesliga with yesterday’s 2-1 defeat to Mainz as Bo Henriksen’s side now jumped to fourth in the standings. For now, qualifying for the DFB-Pokal semi-final would give Marco Rose the chance to end the season in the dugout.
However, their working relationship is seeing its final days after an underwhelming season in both Bundesliga and Champions League. Sky now reports that there are already three names on Leipzig’s shortlist for replacement.
While his name first linked with the club a few months ago, Erik ten Hag is surprisingly not on the list. Meanwhile, Stuttgart’s Sebastian Hoeneß is top of their wishlist as the news was also confirmed by kicker.
There is a release clause of around €8 million in Hoeneß’s Stuttgart contract. On Friday, the 42-year-old played down Leipzig’s interest as he always maintains “constant contact” with Stuttgart. Stuttgart and Leipzig could cross paths in today’s Pokal semi-final draw.
According to Sky, Oliver Glasner is another name currently discussed at Leipzig. The Europa League-winning coach is currently enjoying his time with Crystal Palace after a difficult start to the season. Marcel Schäfer’s involvement could certainly help Leipzig’s case, but it’ll take a huge effort to bring back the 50-year-old Austrian back to Bundesliga.
Roger Schmidt, who has been without a club since August, rounds up the list. Due to his previous spell in RB Salzburg, Schmidt looks to be the perfect candidate for the required RB principles as Leipzig aim for a fresh start next season.
