FC Barcelona went about their job against Real Sociedad with the precision of a surgeon, hardly breaking a sweat as they put 4 goals past the Basque club without conceding anything in return. It was a very clinical performance from Hansi Flick’s team.
Of course, the Catalan club were heavily helped out by the early red card to Real Sociedad after the last man fouled Dani Olmo who was on a break away. After going down to 10 men, Imanol Algaucil’s side did not stand a chance against the might of this Barcelona team.
Goals from Gerard Martin, Marc Casadó, Ronald Araújo, and Robert Lewandowski were enough to help Barcelona reclaim the top spot in La Liga. It was a night Flick would be particularly thankful for ahead of a crucial run of fixtures.
After an eventful night, here are three key takeaways from Barcelona’s dominant 4-0 victory over Real Sociedad at the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium in La Liga.
Yes, you read that right. Barcelona have scored 52 goals since the beginning of 2025 in 15 games and do not seem to be showing any signs of stopping. Hansi Flick’s men have a hunger to keep scoring more and more and that is always a good sign.
Goals keep coming from everywhere on the pitch with the defense in particular seemingly contributing in every other game. Chance creation hasn’t been an issue for this Barcelona team and they have also been fairly clinical at taking them.
Although the defense hasn’t been rock solid in recent weeks, Barcelona have continued to push on thanks to their incredible attacking threat. They are able to consistently outscore their opponents and play some beautiful football on the way.
On this night against Sociedad, Barcelona had some beautiful attacking patterns and the first goal that they scored was one of the best team goals all season with Lamine and Dani Olmo in particular at the heart of it. Long may this goalscoring streak continue.
Against Atletico Madrid in the 4-4 draw earlier this week, Pau Cubarsi scored his first goal at senior level having come through the ranks at La Masia and celebrated it by kissing the badge. The elation was evident on the face.
Now, today, against Real Sociedad, two other youngsters continued the streak with Gerard Martin scoring a beautiful volley to open his account with a finish that would have made legendary Brazilian left-back Roberto Carlos proud.
Soon after, Marc Casado followed suit. The ex-Barca Atletic captain inadvertently bundled in a Dani Olmo shot into the net and his celebration was a very emotional one. Everyone knew what the 21-year-old had gone through to reach this stage.
The icing on the cake would have been Hector Fort coming off the bench and getting off the mark too but it wasn’t to be today. The Spaniard actually tried to score with a very good shot but he will soon get his turn to get off the mark.
For much of the first half of the season, Gerard Martin saw a lot of game time as Hansi Flick managed his minutes very carefully, but the Spaniard seemed like a liability every single time he was on the pitch. He received a lot of criticism, understandably.
However, credit where it is due. The backup left-back has been improving with time and finally looks ready to be a part of the first team as a squad player. Against Real Sociedad, he was not just decent but actually had a very good game.
Martin was decisive on the ball, got past his man with ease and kept it neat and simple for the majority of the game. His finish is one that will go into the highlight reels at the end of his career and that would give him the world of confidence.
In whatever lies ahead of Barcelona this season, Martin is likely to receive opportunities whenever Flick wants to give Balde a rest and it must be said that fans will be behind him going forward. Let’s wait and see how he plays whenever given the chance.
