Liverpool have won the title and the 3 promoted teams are going straight down again. So far so dull in the Premier League, which has not had a classic season, let’s face it.

There is still something to play for though – Champions League qualification. And Chelsea find themselves right in the mix for that prize.

Jamie Carragher has been looking at the race for the top 5 on Sky Sports, and his predictions for are bad news for Chelsea fans:

“I think Nottingham Forest will just do it. I think Chelsea will miss out; I think they’ve got the toughest fixtures,” the former Liverpool defender said.

“I think Newcastle will make it. I think Manchester City will just make it as well… I think Aston Villa still has the FA Cup and at least two Champions League games, so Aston Villa will just miss out.”

Carragher’s fears for Chelsea based in plain fact

Chelsea’s fixtures to end the season.

We certainly agree we’ve got the toughest fixtures. After Ipswich this weekend, things get really nasty: in-form Fulham away, in-form Everton at home, Liverpool at home, Newcastle away, Man United at home, Nottingham Forest away.

How many of those games could you confidently say we’re favourites in?

The games against our top 5 rivals Forest and Newcastle will be thrilling, and the race will likely be decided in those games. But it’s then that our European participation may start to drag. Conference League opposition are not up to much, but you’ve still got to play those games, and mixing them with such important headline weekend games is going to be a real drag.

The only good news is that it’s still in our hands – beat Newcastle and Forest and we should be able to seal the deal.

Missing out on the top 5 having been within a win of the top of the table at Christmas would be brutally disappointing.
