Two Premier League teams struggling for wins go head-to-head on Sunday night (December 15th) as Southampton host Tottenham on the south coast.
Kick-off at St Mary’s Stadium is scheduled for 19:00 GMT, with the game set to be shown live on TNT Sports 1.
Southampton (5-2-1-2): Lumley; Walker-Peters, Harwood-Bellis, Wood, Bednarek, Manning; Downes, Fernandes; Dibling; Armstrong, Onuachu
Tottenham (4-3-3): Forster; Spence, Gray, Dragusin, Udogie; Kulusevski, Sarr, Bergvall; Johnson, Solanke, Son
Starting with the hosts, manager Russell Martin is dealing with a substantial injury list ahead of the weekend.
Aaron Ramsdale (finger), Will Smallbone (thigh), Juan Larios (unspecified), Adam Lallana (thigh), Ross Stewart (calf) and Gavin Bazunu (Achilles) are all out on the sidelines, while Jack Stephens is suspended.
In better news for the Saints, Martin has confirmed Paul Onuachu and Jan Bednarek have both recovered from their recent injuries and are available for Sunday.
As for Spurs, they too have an unenviable list of walking wounded who won’t be playing any part at St Mary’s this weekend.
First-choice defensive duo Cristian Romero (thigh) and Micky van de Ven (thigh) join Wilson Odobert (hamstring), Mikey Moore (illness), Richarlison (hamstring), Ben Davies (hamstring) and Guglielmo Vicario (ankle) in missing the trip to the south coast.
To add insult to injury, Rodrigo Bentancur and Yves Bissouma are both suspended for this game against a Southampton side currently rock-bottom of the Premier League standings.
Having had a brief confrontation with supporters in the Spurs away end after a 1-0 defeat to Bournemouth, Ange Postecoglou went on to heavily criticise senior player Timo Werner to the media after a disappointing performance in a 1-1 draw at Rangers on Thursday night.
It seems Postecoglou is grabbing more column inches with his actions in recent weeks than he should and perhaps the current pressure is taking its toll on the former Celtic boss.
A trip to face a team bottom of the Premier League table with just one win in 15 games in the top flight would on paper appear like an ideal fixture for a Spurs side who are without a win in their last five outings in all competitions.
However, Spurs have slipped up in winnable games already this season, handing both Crystal Palace and Ipswich Town their first wins of this Premier League campaign.
St Mary’s has also been an unhappy hunting ground for Spurs in the past, with the Lilywhites winning just one of their last seven visits to Southampton in all competitions.
With a poor run of results and with Postecoglou drawing extra attention to himself with confrontations with supporters and comments in press conferences, anything other than a win on Sunday will only see the pressure pile on the Spurs boss even further.
Injuries have certainly not helped Postecoglou’s cause this term but it has been startling how contrasting the mood now feels regarding the Australian after his first impressive start to life in north London last season.
Things change quickly in football and Postecoglou will be hoping a positive result at Southampton can lead to better things in the busy festive period.
