Francesco Totti has revealed that both AC Milan and Inter tried very hard to sign him from AS Roma, but were forced to give up their pursuit.
There is no doubting that Totti is one of the legends of Italian football and of Roma. The forward spent his entire career with his beloved Giallorossi, winning a Serie A title, two Coppa Italia titles, and two Supercoppa Italiana titles.
During that time, he became the second-top scorer of all time in Italian league history with 250 goals, amassing 316 goals across all competitions. He remains adored to this day by most fans in Italy, given he was also part of the 2006 World Cup winning team.
Totti spoke in an interview with Betsson.sport, for whom he is brand ambassador. Responding to Fabrizio Romano, the Roma icon was asked about whether he could have left for Real Madrid, Inter or Silvio Berlusconi’s Milan.
“Have I ever spoken to Florentino Perez? No, I stayed out of it. The club spoke to him since he had excellent relations with Sensi. He didn’t want to sell me to anyone,” he said (via Calciomercato.com).
“He would have done anything to keep me. In his management he would never have accepted my sale. He considered me his son. Milan and Inter pushed harder than anyone else. After the first meeting with the president, however, they threw in the towel.”
