Utd take first steps in pursuit of soon-to-be-free agent Bundesliga ace, Slot thinks he’s the ‘best in Germany’

Manchester United are among a host of Premier League clubs sizing up a move for one stalwart Bundesliga ace who’s out of contract next summer.

Indeed, the Red Devils have reignited their interest in Jonathan Tah ahead of him becoming a free agent next June.

United had already mulled over a move for the centre-half last season, as he reportedly had a £15 million release clause free to be activated in the previous transfer window. However, INEOS chiefs ultimately pursued younger options in the forms of Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt.

Bayern Munich then began targeting Tah as a direct replacement for De Ligt before they ultimately opted against a deal, settling for the arrival of Japan international Hiroki Ito to bolster Vincent Kompany’s defensive options.

It’s no surprise that United are drawing up plans to strengthen the backline as the likes of Jonny Evans, Victor Lindelof, and Harry Maguire are all out of contract at the same time as Tah – although the latter does have a one-year option, which is likely to be activated in the coming months.

TBR Football has now revealed just how fierce the competition is for Tah’s signature, with Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa and Newcastle United all keeping tabs on his situation. Only United, Chelsea and Spurs have gone as far as speaking to intermediaries, for now.

The 28-year-old, whom Arne Slot recently hailed as ‘the best defender in Germany’, played an influential role for Bayer Leverkusen in their unprecedented invincible Bundesliga campaign last season, as well as their DFB Pokal triumph.

He then headed straight to the Euros and started four matches for his nation, being suspended for the last-16 clash against Denmark before paying 80 minutes of the Germans’ quarter-final defeat to eventual winners Spain.
