Santiago Gimenez has cooled down a bit after his red hot start at AC Milan, and Antonio Vitiello believes that he requires help from the supporting cast.
After signing for over €30m from Feyenoord in the winter transfer window and scoring three goals relatively early on – including one against his former club – there was a lot of enthusiasm about what the Mexican can bring.
However, since then he struggling to find the net a bit more. His last goal came against the Rotterdam club during the second leg of the Champions League play-off tie, back on February 18, meaning he has now gone one month without a goal.
Vitiello published his weekly column for MilanNews in which he spoke about a number of topics from the new sporting director to the future of some players on loan. As part of it, he dedicated a section to Gimenez’s form.
“Different story for Santiago Gimenez. The Mexican striker needs help, he hasn’t scored in the league for over a month now and since he is a permanent purchase, you can’t lose an asset of the club,” he said.
“The coach will have to find a way to trigger him, to serve him in the best way with an attacking game that enhances him. Santiago will be Milan’s striker in the coming years too, we need to help him enhance his characteristics, to make him grow.
“It will be very important to have him at his best for the last nine games of the league and for the two legs against Inter in the Coppa Italia derby.”
It is a contrast to what Alessandro Costacurta said about the 23-year-old, given he believes the impetus is more on him to get involved in the game rather than Conceicao to build around him.
