Barcelona’s 3-2 victory over Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey final was a match filled with drama, emotion, and everything fans could hope for in a classic.
From a dramatic comeback to red cards, the match kept everyone on the edge of their seats.
However, it was not just the football that got attention as several Real Madrid players displayed unsportsmanlike behaviour that overshadowed their team’s defeat.
While Antonio Rudiger’s poor conduct is sure to face sanction, Dani Carvajal’s actions have gone largely unnoticed, even though they were equally deserving of punishment.
Carvajal, who was sidelined with injury and didn’t play in the final, watched the match from behind his team’s bench.
In the heat of the moment, he became visibly frustrated with referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea’s decisions and was caught on camera shouting offensive insults.
Among the words heard were “Sh*t,” “Son of a b***h!” and “Cheek!” These strong outbursts were aimed at the referee, showing a lack of respect for the official’s authority.
What makes this more concerning is that Carvajal was not even on the pitch. Despite not being in the squad and not wearing his kit, his conduct was still very much in the public eye.
The images captured of Carvajal’s outbursts paint a picture of a player unable to control his emotions when faced with defeat, adding further to Real Madrid’s already poor behaviour on the night.
According to the RFEF Disciplinary Code, insults and contemptuous attitudes towards referees, even when off the field, can lead to sanctions.
Had the incident been properly addressed, Carvajal could have faced a suspension for future matches, impacting his availability for Real Madrid’s upcoming fixtures.
While Barcelona celebrated a well-deserved triumph, Real Madrid’s actions off the field cast a shadow over the match, where the Blaugrana showed resilience and determination to claim the well-deserved win.
