During Barcelona’s recent clash against Alaves, Gavi found himself in the thick of an unfortunate incident that forced him off the pitch.
The young midfielder collided with Tomas Conechny, leading to concerns for both players’ well-being.
Conechny was taken off on a medical trolley wearing a neck brace, while Gavi initially attempted to carry on but was eventually substituted by Fermin Lopez.
Known for his relentless spirit and determination, Gavi clearly wanted to continue playing despite the setback.
However, team doctors stepped in to assess his condition thoroughly. The medical staff, following standard concussion protocols, had to make the final decision on whether he could safely continue.
After being questioned on the sidelines, it became apparent that Gavi was not fit to remain on the pitch.
One particular question proved decisive: “What day is it?” Gavi’s response raised concerns, as he couldn’t recall the answer. “I have no f**king idea,” he said.
While he accurately answered another question; “And what time is it? Can you tell me the time of the match?”, the initial response, “Two o’clock,” prompted club doctor Ricard Pruna to take no chances.
Despite Gavi’s resistance, he was instructed to leave the game.
Captain Raphinha stepped in to support the decision, advising Gavi to follow medical advice after taking a blow to the head. “Listen to me, you’ve suffered a blow to the head, brother,” said the Brazilian.
Hansi Flick, Barcelona’s head coach, also backed the doctor’s call, “It’s a shock,” emphasising the need to prioritise the player’s safety. Even though Gavi was visibly frustrated, the club’s decision was firm—his health came first.
“We have to be careful,” the manager told the midfielder.
Following the incident, Gavi was taken for a thorough medical examination at a nearby hospital. Fortunately, the results showed no serious issues, and the young midfielder was cleared to return home later that evening.
