Paris Saint-Germain made great strides last night to change the narrative surrounding the club in Europe. PSG have long been considered light-weights in the Champions League as a result of a team built around a scattering of often underperforming superstars.
Eliminating Liverpool (1-1; 4-1 on penalties) at Anfield has certainly brought a new perspective and validated the decision from the club hierarchy to shift towards a future built around the bigger picture rather than the bigger name.
This new dynamic has seen PSG look towards young talent across Europe with high ceilings for growth, and over the summer they recruited João Neves (20) and Désiré Doué (19), while the season before they brought in Bradley Barcola (22).
PSG’s president Nasser Al-Khelaifi praised his team but wanted to keep a level head as he suggested that the project is still in its early days during a post-match interview with CBS. “Even if we had lost this game, I would say the same thing. We are building a young team for the future.”
He continued, “This process will take time. We are building something for the future… We’re not going to say that we’re going to win the Champions League today, but match by match, and step by step we’re building something for the future.”
